Overview
Empower young Alaskans with the skills to thrive in the outdoors. HoWL instructors lead youth aged 10-19 on wilderness expeditions based out of Homer, Alaska. Trip activities may include backpacking, rock-climbing, paddle-boarding, canoeing and trail work. In the field, HoWL Instructors teach fundamental wilderness skills, such as fire-building and basic navigation, along with skills associated with the particular trip activities. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: acting silly, teaching camp cooking skills, leading by example, and preparations/cleanup before and after every trip. HoWL is a challenge-by-choice, fun-oriented organization, and instructors are responsible for maintaining safe situations while allowing for participant decision-making and spontaneity. Position pays $21-22/hr DOE.
Qualifications:
*Wilderness First Responder certification
*Must pass a background check
Required Skills:
*Backcountry expedition or wilderness experience
*Ability to work and manage risks in remote and semi-remote wilderness locations
*Competency in fundamental outdoors skills
Preferred Skills:
*Experience in education/working with youth
*Backcountry guiding experience
*Rock climbing experience
About Homer Wilderness Leaders
Homer Wilderness Leaders (HoWL) aims to facilitate positive outdoor experiences for Alaskan youth through fun-first adventures in local wilderness areas. Using outdoor experiential education, HoWL also seeks to empower local youth with the skills necessary to thrive and lead in wilderness settings. Teaching participants risk assessment and management tools is an important component of the HoWL philosophy.
