Overview
The Assistant Coordinator of the Outdoor Program plays a crucial role in supporting the administration and execution of the Outdoor Program. This position enhances the program’s impact by managing daily operations, facilitating outdoor activities, and ensuring the highest standards of safety and educational value.
Team Oversight: Manages the day-to-day operations of the program, supervising hourly and volunteer staff. Oversees all outings, events, marketing, and courses for the Outdoor Program.
Education and Engagement: Organizes external and internal courses for the continued outdoor education of trip leaders; develops and facilitates events, outings, and campaigns designed to increase participation and engagement of CMU students.
Decision-Making: Assists in the development of program strategies and implementation plans under the guidance of the coordinator.
Training and Teaching: Working with the Coordinator, develop and execute practical technical and interpersonal skill trainings for Trip leaders and Rental Shop staff.
Financial Management: Aids in budget management and financial planning for the program, ensuring resources are utilized efficiently.
Strategic Outcomes: Support the expansion and refinement of outdoor programming, increasing student participation and satisfaction.
Project Results: Ensure operational efficiency and program excellence through meticulous planning and staff training.
Student Feedback: Use student feedback to continually develop and innovate OP offerings

Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications Required:
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
Wilderness First Responder
Knowledge of use and maintenance of various types of outdoor equipment
Prior experience as a trip leader or guide in an Outdoor Recreation/ Experiential Education program
Prior experience as a trip leader or guide in rock climbing and backpacking
Knowledge and experience in employee supervision and training
Must have a demonstrated understanding of excellent customer service and evidence
Preferred Skills:
Broad experience in integrating issues relating to student development in a college/university setting
General knowledge of computers and prior familiarity with the policies and structure of a typical four-year public college/university is helpful
Desert Mountain Medicine Instructor
CWA or PCIA climbing wall instructor
Leave No Trace Certification
Avalanche Level 1
ACA- Swift Water Rescue Instructor
AMGA or PCIA single pitch instructor
Avalanche Level 2

The Outdoor Program is Colorado Mesa University’s headquarters for outdoor adventure and education. We are a student-fee funded organization, whose purpose is to offer and promote affordable, safe and environmentally conscious outdoor trips. We also offer trainings and equipment rentals.
