About The Great Basin Institute

The Great Basin Institute is a non-profit conservation organization that has been working to promote environmental research, education, and conservation field work throughout the West for 25 years. GBI partners with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and Clark County, Nevada to carry out desert tortoise surveys in support of multiple research and monitoring projects. The Mojave desert tortoise is listed as threatened under the Endangered Species Act and these projects track population recovery, improve understanding of the ecology of the species, and inform conservation efforts. Field protocols include line distance sampling and telemetry monitoring.
