The Wilderness Guide will have a broad range of skills and knowledge concerning the out-of-doors. He/she will participate in the planning, teaching, leading and processing the group’s activities. This position requires that the individual can adapt to a particular group or individual’s needs. Effective communication is essential in every aspect of the job. The health and safety of the clients are the Guide’s utmost concern. The Wilderness Guide is responsible to the Directors of AEI Base Camp and the Director/Owner of Adventure Experiences LLC.
All housing and meals are provided during the duration of employement.
Previous experience in wilderness guiding is not a requirement. However any experience with the activities we guide is beneficial.
This is a paid guiding position, pay dependent on experience. A level 1 ACCT certification is included for all new staff.
Guides are with clients staying at our basecamp from breakfast through dinner, and also help facilitate some after-dinner activities. We guide rock climbing, backpacking, and peak ascents, as well as a lot of team building high and low ropes course activities. We teach orienteering and leadership to students. Our main clients are 16-22 year old students, however we serve as young as 5th grade and many adults as well.
This position can be slightly modified to work within internship requirements for a variety of degree paths. Please note on your application if you are interested in pursuing internship credit.
- Wilderness First Aid or higher medical certification
Two or more of the following:
1. College degree program in a related field
2. Attend Outward Bound, NOLS or similar experience
3. Experience in supervision of children and/or adults
4. Teaching experience
5. Minimum of one (1) year Adventure Recreation Experience
6. Wilderness First Aid or higher and CPR
About AEI Base Camp
Where: AEI Base Camp located at 10,000 feet in Taylor Park, Colorado. AEI is a Christian wilderness summer camp. We specialize in getting students and adults out of their comfort zones and providing unique experiences. Some of the adventures we guide include multi-day backpacking trips, rock climbing (on real rock), low ropes team building, high ropes challenge course, and peak ascents. We also teach our participants lots of skills including orienteering and leadership.
