Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth . The islands have a rich historic occupation period, which spans nearly 200 years; the historic buildings and landscape features range in materials (wood frame, adobe, concrete, stone) and purpose (ranching, fishing, military history, U.S. Coast Guard).
