Founded in 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) is the oldest conservation and recreation organization in the United States. This role is a key leadership position, guiding our efforts to recruit, train, and enable outdoor leaders across AMC’s staff and volunteer communities. It’s all about engaging people in support of joyous, meaningful outdoor experiences.
As a full-time, year-round, salaried position reporting to the Director of the Center for Outdoor Learning & Leadership, this role offers a chance to deliver AMC’s mission through accessible training opportunities. Please note, periodic travel is part of the job (Regions: East, Central, Mid Atlantic, South)
What You’ll Be Doing at AMC
Lead stakeholder engagement, training, and enablement for leaders across the East, Central, Mid Atlantic, and South regions
Maintain and grow partnerships to recruit outdoor leaders
Actively coach team members to align performance objectives and tactics
Participate in outdoor activities offered by volunteer leaders to build direct connections and rapport with the communities we serve.
Bring organizational culture to life through modeling, direct engagement, and trainings
Manage regional grant activities, including reporting responsibilities
Will lead a team of 3 direct reports: 2 managers and 1 coordinator
Lead one cross-regional team
What AMC Can Offer You
Salary: $61,116 – $82,524
We are committed to equitable compensation practices. The initial salary represents our starting point, and our compensation philosophy is designed to reward and recognize the contributions of our employees as they grow within the organization. External candidates typically begin their journey with us at the starting point of the salary range. The final compensation offer will be based on factors such as experience, education, competencies, and geographic differential relevant to the position, and will be discussed during the interview process.

Qualifications:
What AMC Is Looking For
BA/BS in education, recreation or outdoor leadership. Direct experience building volunteer training programs and supporting enablement in the outdoor recreation or conservation space will be considered as a substitute.
4 to 6 years of experience in developing and managing teams to deliver training programs, both virtually and in person.
Experience building collaborative partnerships with organizations serving youth and adults underrepresented in outdoor spaces.
Required Skills:
Demonstrated effective management of teams and volunteers, balancing project budgets and navigating organizational challenges. Adept at juggling complex projects with multiple deadlines and milestones
A track record of navigating and leading a team through organizational change.
Excellent communication skills, whether in writing, speaking, or presenting.
A genuine enthusiasm for outdoor experiences and activities and flexibility to work weekends and evenings, including regional travel to engage stakeholders
