Get ready to share in the transformative experience of wilderness tripping and teambuilding activities! Leadership Facilitators work with participants of all ages and backgrounds to develop strong leadership and collaborative skills. In this position, you may work with Summer Camp and Outpost participants, school groups, and a wide variety of community organizations. You will create a plan and then lead these groups through a progression of teambuilding and problem solving activities. Throughout the summer, this programing will include facilitating low and high ropes course activities and solo-leading 3 to 4 day wilderness trips.

1. Commit to, model and teach the Manito-wish mission and YMCA core values
2. Uphold rules and policies established by Camp Manito-wish YMCA
3. Lead trail groups of up to 6 participants on multi-day canoeing, backpacking and kayaking trips, including
• creating a physically and emotionally safe community environment
• facilitating participants’ growth in technical and interpersonal skills
• managing behavior and emotional difficulties
• assessing and managing wilderness risk
• providing first aid care as necessary
4. Facilitate multi-day frontcountry experiential programming for groups of youth aged 10 – 18, including
• autonomously planning and running sequences of activities and processing in small groups of 5 – 12 students to achieve social-emotional outcomes and ensure growth
• facilitating and belaying on a low and high ropes course
• creating a physically and emotionally safe community environment
5. Perform other duties as assigned, including developing trainings and other resources for Camp Manito-wish staff and helping prepare logistical details for programming
6. Live on-site in a community environment and uphold Camp Manito-wish’s policies and standards for housing and community living
7. Manage all risks associated with abuse as directed by Camp Manito-wish YMCA.
8. Other duties, as assigned

1. Minimum 19 years old
2. Previous teaching, guiding or facilitation experience
3. Certified in Lifeguard Training or Wilderness Water Safely, plus Wilderness First Aid or higher (certifications can be obtained at Camp Manito-wish prior to employment start date)
4. Experience in outdoor living and wilderness travel. Possesses skills in expedition canoeing, backpacking, and ropes course facilitation, or is able and willing to obtain those skills
5. Desire and proven ability to work with youth

Required Skills:

1. Ability to communicate and work with groups of adolescents while providing necessary instruction to ensure successful programming
2. Ability to observe participant behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques
3. Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards
4. Mental and physical ability to respond to situations requiring rescue and first aid

About Camp Mantio-wish YMCA

Our 100+ year old Summer Camp provides a combination of traditional camp activities (archery, horsemanship, swimming, etc.) and wilderness tripping for youth entering 5th through 10th grade. There are separate 3-week boys and girls sessions, as well as 2-weeks of Family Camp. Boys Camp runs through June, Family Camp in early July, and Girls Camp from mid-July to mid-August. Our programming puts emphasis on the wilderness experience and we use it as a resource to facilitate growth and leadership development in partnership with our in-camp experience. Along with Summer Camp, Manito-wish is also features a robust wilderness expeditions program called Outpost and Leadership Program that facilitates teambuilding activities for a multitude of camp and community groups. We have full and part summer opportunities for staff members who are 18 years and older.
