Overview

The Lead Aquatics Coordinator facilitates the aquatic activities, which includes swimming and kayaking in a natural river, as well as river hikes. This position teaches youth about team building, goal setting, and encourages youth to overcome challenges in a positive manner and promotes character development. The Lead Aquatics Coordinator oversees all waterfront activities, including water safety, and swim tests, and supervises the lifeguard team including conducting in-service training and skill checks. The lifeguard team plans and implements waterfront programming to engage campers and foster character development and promote healthy lifestyles, while providing oversight during other activity times and as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
-Manage lifeguard staff to ensure adherence to policies and positive youth development skills.
-Provide positive and safe environment for participants to engage in all aquatics activities
-Ensure safety of all campers, including setting clear safety expectations, observing and engaging campers while in their care, assessing the appropriateness of camper behaviors, following emergency procedures
-Ensure the safety requirements are being followed by all participants on aquatics activities elements
-Foster an atmosphere of teamwork for all participants
-Foster character development consistent with BGCSF philosophy
-Run activities with youth including but not limited to: wellness activities, outdoor education, hiking, and overnight camping
-Support campers in other groups when
-Engage campers with a positive attitude
-Other duties as specified by direct supervisor

Meals & Lodging:
All Camp Employees are expected to live, sleep and work at Camp. Camp Mendocino provides meals and lodging on site for the duration of the employment period. Lead Aquatics Coordinator will not be required to stay in a cabin with youth on a regular basis, but will be assigned bunk-style indoor housing that may be shared with up to 3 other staff members. Three meals per day will be provided, including on days off.

Schedule:
-Temporary/Seasonal Summer position.
-Applicants should be available June 8 – August 7, 2024 to work & live on-site at our Camp location in Northern California (Mendocino County).
-Staff members work 40-56 hours/week depending on position with two days off per week. Days off vary per session.

Pay
At BGCSF, our decisions are based on other factors and dependent on circumstances for each position. Depending on the need and requirement of the position, an individual could be hired at or near the entry level, mid – level or top of the range for their role and compensation. As such, a reasonable estimate for this temporary summer position from June 8 – August 7, is $4,500.

Required Skills:

Experience supervising or overseeing staff or volunteers.

Current Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or equivalent
Over the age of 21 by start of employment
Experience supervising youth as a lifeguard.

Experience leading youth programs.
Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers and youth.
Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations in a professional manner.
Ability to work independently

Preferred Skills:

Experience working with youth in an overnight camp setting.
Experience working with youth from disadvantaged circumstances.

Physical Requirements:
Must be able to lift 50lbs.
Must be able to walk on uneven terrain for at least 3 miles.
Must be able to stand for 8 hours (with breaks).
Must be able to work in temperatures ranging from 30° to 100°.

About Camp Mendocino

Camp is located four hours north of San Francisco and is spread over 2,000 acres. We provide transportation between San Francisco and Camp at the start and end of the summer.

All Camp Employees are expected to live, sleep and work at Camp. Camp Mendocino provides meals and lodging for the duration of the employment period.
