Overview
Monday through Thursday we send campers and staff on 2-3 day hiking, climbing and canoeing trip. Our campers learn the pleasures and challenges of sleeping outdoors, assisting in meal preparation and cooperating in a group while exploring the outdoors. The primary responsibility of the Director of Trips is all things trips including trip itineraries, trip food, trip staff, trip transportation and trip budget and expenses. Specifics include, but are not limited to:
Essential functions:
Pre-camp:
1. Update “Trips the Walden Way”
2. Open Camp Craft. Inspect, repair, replace, organize and update inventory of trip equipment.
3. Confirm trip reservations
4. Review and confirm White Mountain National Forest Agreement
5. Turn on trip phone contracts
6. Plan and train trip staff on leading a trip at Walden
7. Train and test trip leaders to be Maine State Certified Trip Leaders
8. Plan and organize staff pre-camp trip
Summer:
1. Train and supervise trip leaders
2. Work with Kitchen Manager to order trip food.
3. Oversee the packing of trip food
4. Work with Office Manager to organize health forms to be sent out on trips
5. All things trip finances including requesting camper money and trip money needed for each trip, reconciling trip money once each trip returns and working with the office manager to ensure that all camper trip charges are accounted for in Campminder.
6. Complete the end of the summer WMNF report
7. Assign vans for trips and staff time off
8. Attend daily meetings with leadership staff to support the running of camp.
At the beginning of each week:
1. By Thursday assign campers and staff to trip groups for the following week. Also share final trip lists with the Nurses and the Head Counselor so camper medication can be packed and staff time off can be assigned
2. Each weekend announce the following week’s trips to staff and then to campers
3. Meet with trip leaders and then trip groups to review trip itinerary
4. Provide campers and staff with a packing list and oversee packing of trip equipment
Supporting Trips
1. Monday through Thursday oversee the departure of all trips. Check and double check that they have all of their equipment and food.
2. Monday through Friday be on call for trip leaders who are out of camp and may have questions and/or need help
3. Tuesday through Friday welcome trips back to camp. Oversee the return of all equipment, pitching of tents and tarps, return of all food and cleaning of the vans.
4. Repair and/or replace broken or damaged trip equipment. Update trip equipment inventory.
5. Work with trip leaders to clean cooking equipment
6. Collect and review trip reports
Qualifications:
The Director of Trips is responsible for supervising and supporting these wilderness trips and the trip leaders. The ideal candidate will have strong problem solving skills, have experience wilderness camping especially with children, have knowledge of the Maine and NH wilderness, and have supervisory experience.
