Chadwick Schools Mission is to develop global citizens with keen minds, exemplary character, self-knowledge, and the ability to lead. The program mission of Chadwick Outdoor Education is to fulfill the school’s mission by empowering students’ sense of self and place through a progression of outdoor competencies. Chadwick’s core values include respect, fairness, responsibility, compassion, and honesty. The core competencies include critical and creative thinking, character, courage, communication, collaboration, and cultural competence.

Through the outdoor medium, COE instructors teach and facilitate personal responsibility, team building, decision making and problem-solving, leadership, camping, map reading and navigation, expedition behavior, health, hygiene and self-care in the outdoors, the importance of reflection time, natural and cultural history, environmental education, hazard and risk management, group processing and communication, equipment/clothing selection and use, and minimum impact ethics. Instructors are hired on a temporary, part-time agreement basis. COE program is a progression of curriculum from 7th-12th grade. We start with three basecamp courses and continue backpacking in the spring with 8th grade. The 12th-grade course is a three-week-long expedition as a culminating/ rite of passage course. We have four courses in the fall and four in the spring.

Job Description for Chadwick Outdoor Education: Field Instructors/ Faculty

Outdoor Education Instructors will instruct basecamp and/or backpacking courses to students grades 7-12. Work with a 1-2 co-instructor(s) to facilitate, manage, teach and be responsible for a group of 10-14 students. Instructors are required to teach a core curriculum for all courses and additional backpacking curriculum for various courses, maintain a detailed course log and paperwork, be able to drive large passenger vehicles, perform tasks pre-course, during the course, and post-course, and have excellent risk management skills.

Location of job: Chadwick School, Palos Verdes Peninsula, CA, and a wide variety of course areas in Southern CA

Salary and Benefits: The instructor’s hourly wage is paid in compliance with California wage guidelines.

8th grade Basecamp- Joshua Tree National Park
March 5 – 11 (2 days of prep on site)

12th grade backpacking- Southern Sierra
May 7 – June 3 (2 student days plus 6 prep/briefing days)

11th Grade backpacking- Southern Sierra
June 9 – 17 (3 days of prep/briefing)

Qualifications:

Instructors must have current WFR and CPR certification.

Several years of post-college professional experience leading students for reputable outdoor education programs and schools

Teaching experience (classroom/outdoors)

Appropriate course area/ backcountry wilderness leading experience, both personal and professional

Experience with students ranging from grade 7-12

Instructors must have and maintain a clean driving record, have a current driver's license, and be a minimum age of 25

Required Skills:

INSTRUCTOR RESPONSIBILITIES
All instructors are responsible for maintaining and updating the program with all required certifications, including Wilderness First Responder and CPR certificates.

All courses begin with a two to five-day pre-course orientation/ training. Instructors are to be punctual and prepared and should have set aside personal business for the duration of the orientation and course.

For each course, instructors are responsible to complete all paperwork outlined during course orientation

Preferred Skills:

All instructors must read, know, and follow the Chadwick Outdoor Education risk management policies outlined in the COE Instructor Manual.

Courses end with a de-brief between instructor pairs or instructors as a group and the Directors. The course log will be reviewed; any risk management concerns, accidents, behavioral incidents, or near-miss information is reviewed.

Chadwick School is a K-12 Independent School. We run an in-house 7-12 grade Outdoor Education program required of all students. We mainly run backpacking courses in the upper school.
