Overview

Outdoor Education Instructors will instruct basecamp and/or backpacking courses to students grades 7-12. Work with a 1-2 co-instructor(s) to facilitate, manage, teach and be responsible for a group of 10-14 students. Instructors are required to teach a core curriculum for all courses and an additional backpacking curriculum for various courses, maintain a detailed course log and paperwork, be able to drive large passenger vehicles, perform tasks pre-course, during the course, and post-course, and have excellent risk management skills. Courses are 5 – 20 days in length. We run basecamp-style courses and backpacking-style courses.

Compensation:
$120 per day for prep days
$330 per day for field days
food/ lodging is provided while on contract

Qualifications:

Applicants must have current WFR and CPR certification.
Several years of post-college professional experience leading students for reputable outdoor education programs and schools
Teaching experience (classroom/outdoors)
Appropriate course area/ backcountry wilderness leading experience, both personal and professional
Experience with students ranging from grade 7-12
Applicants must have and maintain a clean driving record, have a current driver's license, and be a minimum age of 25 to drive

Required Skills:

Applicants need to be highly competent outdoor leaders, patient and inspiring teachers, and skilled outdoor enthusiasts with sound and prudent judgment.
Applicants will be able to recognize and act on appropriate and inappropriate student behavior and have the ability to manage student-to-student, instructor-to-student, and instructor-to-instructor relationships. This includes the ability to give feedback and deal positively with conflict and stress.

Preferred Skills:

Applicants will have the technical skills necessary to travel in the course areas used, and in particular, activities taught on course, the ability to teach these skills to students, good risk management skills applicable to institutional settings, and the ability to develop the whole student.
Applicants will be positive environmental role models with sound knowledge of natural history of the particular course area environments used.

Chadwick School is a K-12 Independent School. We run an in-house 7-12 grade Outdoor Education program required of all students. We mainly run backpacking courses in the upper school.
