OVERVIEW
The Dunn School Outdoor Education Program is seeking experienced instructors to serve as basecamp managers for the school’s fall 2023 Middle School trip to Monterey.
COMPENSATION
Instructors will have three (3) prep days and three (3) days in the field, with one (1) post-trip administration day.
Updated Daily Rates
For basecamp managers, on-campus prep days will now pay a $120/day daily rate and field days will pay a $225/day daily rate. This amounts to approximately $1,155 per trip pre-tax, depending on actual hours/days worked.
Outdoor Education instructors also receive free on-campus housing, free meals at the exceptional dining hall, and free access to the campus and school facilities in addition to a travel reimbursement up to $300 for instructors living more than fifty miles from campus. The school’s location in the Santa Ynez Valley is also an incredible location for personal exploration.
QUALIFICATIONS
The successful candidate will hold a current WFR or W-EMT and CPR certification, will have extensive personal and professional experience on outdoor education trips, and will be passionate about facilitating powerful educational experiences for youth in the outdoors.
PROGRAM
The Outdoor Education Program is a central aspect of a Dunn School education. As of 2018, successful participation in at least one outdoor education trip each year is a graduation requirement for all students. These trips are designed to help students ignite an interest in the outdoors, develop a sense of stewardship towards the natural world, and build meaningful relationships amongst students and members of the professional community.
ROLE
The instructor will be responsible for the management of a basecamp for middle school students, including but not limited to basecamp kitchen management, meals, gear preparation and packing, and co-facilitation of activities, games, and relevant curriculum in coordination with middle school faculty.
RESPONSIBILITIES
-Serve as a basecamp manager, alongside members of the Dunn Faculty, on a 3- or 5-day basecamp experience for members of the 6th, 7th, and/or 8th grade.
-Assist in equipment packing, food packing, and trip administration
-Drive vehicles of various sizes with students to and from the trip site
-Co-teach and co-facilitate the Dunn Outdoor Education Program curriculum, with learning outcomes focusing on developing outdoor skills, discovering a sense of place, and applying and reflecting on the Dunn Core Values (emotional wellness, physical readiness, intellectual growth, social responsibility, and moral courage).
