Overview

Located in Estes Park, Colorado, Eagle Rock School implements effective and engaging practices that foster each student’s unique potential and helps them use their minds well. Eagle Rock School serves adolescents who are not thriving in their current situations, for
whom few positive options exist, and who are interested in taking control of their lives and learning. Twice a year, our Outdoor Education department facilitates a 24-day wilderness orientation experience for newly enrolled students. Eagle Rock School is accredited by the Association for Experiential Education.
The Field Instructor role supports Eagle Rock School’s mission and curriculum through co-facilitation of the wilderness orientation course. You will work with a team of instructors to serve as a role model for students, exercise strong judgment-based decision making, demonstrate effective communication and self reflection, foster safe and inclusive learning opportunities for youth, and ultimately teach new students the foundational skills for living and recreating outdoors.

Contract length: 37.5 days in length. Contract dates: Afternoon of 9/21/23 – EOD of 10/28/23 Course location: Gila National Forest, New Mexico

Function as part of an instructor team for a 24-day wilderness backpacking course for ~10 students newly enrolled to the high school. Participate in a 5-day staff training and 5-day pre-course orientation with students on Eagle Rock’s campus to prepare for the expedition (including gear and food packing, student support, and other course logistics). Must aid in driving school vehicles to and from the course area. Familiarize yourself with Eagle Rock course/school curriculum and be willing to implement it into your instructional repertoire. Assess student’s performance throughout the course, providing feedback, coaching, and support. Write a comprehensive assessment of overall performance at the end of the course.

Qualifications:

Extended wilderness trip (21+ day backpacking or other expeditionary courses) leadership experience is preferred. Applicants must have a current Driver’s License, Wilderness First Responder & CPR certification. Ability to work long hours in difficult and stressful conditions. Experience working in a high school setting with students of age ranges from 15-19 is helpful. Eagle Rock School is a co-ed, residential, tuition free, private, non-profit, full academic curriculum high school in Estes Park, CO designed to work with students who chose to enroll and want to engage more fully in their education.
