Reports to Program Director

Job Purpose: Foster a thriving and effective volunteer program at Ekone Ranch, provide direct leadership of volunteers and staff in conservation and garden initiatives, and support SEF’s programs.

Job Duties:

Volunteer Coordination ~ 60%

Volunteers include: Ekone Interns, staying 2-6 months; General Ranch Volunteers, staying 4-6 weeks; weekend workpartiers and other short-term volunteers; and summer teen/youth volunteers, staying for a week or more.

● Work with all SEF staff to identify long- and short-term volunteer needs, and actively work to meet those needs
● Recruit and screen volunteers through newsletters, social media, online volunteer sites, universities, and other sources
● Manage all volunteers in orientation, training, supporting, scheduling, designating to projects and staff, and appreciation
● Coordinate and support internship program for staff and program areas, including forestry, garden, horse program, cemetery, camp and programs, administration, kitchen, and facilities
● Support collaborative living of volunteers, including excellent maintenance and presentability of shared Lodge space
● Organize and manage at least 6 workparties each year, conducting outreach, planning projects, and coordinating the events in collaboration with other staff and residents
● Manage all other volunteer administrative data, including applications, handbooks, scheduling and calendars, service hours, release forms, background checks, training documents, feedback and evaluation forms, etc.
● Directly supervise volunteers on stewardship and garden projects as directed by Program Director

Program Assistance ~ 40%

Programs include approximately 7 weeks of summer camp, plus school field trips, adult retreats, and various other programs in the spring and fall seasons. Volunteers are heavily involved in programs. This position could be more heavily involved in program leadership depending on skills, interests, and organizational need.

● Coordinate 2-3 weeks of camp and/or youth volunteer sessions, and participate in delivery of other programs as needed year-round
● Provide mentorship for program staff and volunteers
● Support Program Director with fill-in program coordination and management of program staff and volunteers during Director’s time off, including some evenings, weekends, and overnight on-call support
Possible Job Duties:
Depending on the skills and interests of our preferred candidate, some of the following could be applicable:
● Fundraising, specifically for equity and access initiatives
● Cooking for groups
● Horse wrangling & coaching
● Managing Ekone’s educational garden

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:
● Experience managing staff and volunteers–both youth and adults
● Demonstrated passion for outdoor education
● MS Office proficiency, including basic spreadsheet competence
● Google workspace proficiency
● Excellent email management
● Experience with seasonally intense work
● Ability to handle physically, mentally, emotionally, and environmentally demanding work, including living and working in the same location
● Required to live on site

Required Skills:

Physical Requirements:
This position requires ability to:
● Work up to a 3-month period with minimal time off
● Work long days when needed, sometimes 12-14 hours, with much of the day on your feet and actively engaged with participants, in all weather including summer heat
● Hike 5 miles on uneven terrain
● Lift 50lbs
● Work at a desk; use a computer; communicate with colleagues and clients via phone, in-person, and digital channels (email, video conferencing, etc)

Preferred Skills:

● Mental health training
● Wilderness First Responder certification
● Experience with community living
● Experience with educational gardens or small-scale vegetable growing
● Experience or interest in assisting with cooking for groups of 15-30

About Ekone Ranch / Sacred Earth Foundation

We are a non-profit land trust organization that runs: summer camps and other outdoor education programs, a natural-burial conservation cemetery, and a conservation program that manages 1,138 acres of pine/oak forest and grassland on the eastern edge of the Columbia River Gorge in south central Washington state. The ranch is also home to a community of people and animals year-round. There are currently six full-time residents at the ranch, a couple staff members that live off-site, and always other wonderful guests, volunteers, and program participants coming and going.
