Overview

Leads paddling programs and supports all outdoor recreation programs and activities involved with MetroParks’, community outreach, and special events including the region’s largest outdoor adventure festival. Supports the Outdoor Recreation Division’s administrative operations, equipment maintenance and management, and other functions. Provides input and support to other division coordinators across the programming department.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation, park and recreation management, outdoor education or related field, and two years experience in outdoor recreation education, program coordination, including supervision of others.

Relative experience in outdoor adventure activities such as flatwater or whitewater kayaking/canoeing/stand-up paddleboarding, road and/or mountain biking, backpacking, rock climbing, and fly fishing. Outdoor coping skills including wilderness medicine, trip planning.

Required Skills:

American Canoe Association Instructor Trainer Level 3: River Kayaking, Instructor Level 3: River Safety & Rescue (acquire and maintain within one year of employment).

American Canoe Association Instructor Level 1: Introduction to Stand Up Paddleboarding, Wilderness First Responder, Leave No Trace Trainer (acquire and maintain within two years of employment).

American Canoe Association Adaptive Kayak Endorsement and Kayak Rolling Endorsement (acquire and maintain within three years of employment).

Preferred Skills:

The ideal candidate will have experience with outdoor recreation programming and supervision with a strong skillset in a variety of paddlesports that includes experience with moving water with an emphasis on leading groups and instructing in these environments. They will have a strong understanding of river dynamics, group management, and water hazards and mitigation. They will have outdoor industry knowledge and relationships and comfort advocating within the community. Good office skills necessary.
