The High Mountain Institute is seeking an Apprentice Program Coordinator & Wilderness Leader, a full-time position in the HMI Semester.

About the High Mountain Institute Apprentice Program: The Apprentice Program is a professional residency in traditional and outdoor education. Eight apprentices per semester are immersed in an intense, semester-long apprenticeship, participating as students and teachers in the wilderness, academic, and residential components of the HMI semester. The program prepares graduates for employment in outdoor or experiential education, boarding and traditional high schools, adventure recreation, and residential programs. Position Responsibilities:
– Oversee all aspects of the Apprentice Program, including promotion, admissions, and supervision of 8 apprentices per semester
– Facilitate the Apprentice Seminar, a bi-weekly class that examines educational theory and best teaching practices
– Co-lead training trips and semester wilderness expeditions in the Rocky Mountains and canyons of southern Utah (up to 9 weeks per year)
– Participate in weekly residential life responsibilities
– Coordinate with academic teachers in the oversight of apprentice teaching in the classroom
– Design curriculum for apprentice seminar

– Competitive salary, $29,000 – $43,455 depending on experience +on-campus housing (stipend if a campus residence is unavailable)

Qualifications:

BA or higher, willingness to acquire and maintain current WFR & CPR certifications, prior classroom teaching experience, prior leadership experience in wilderness settings, enthusiasm for working with college graduates in a residential setting, criminal and driving background check required.
