Overview
Empower young Alaskans with the skills to thrive in the outdoors. HoWL instructors lead youth aged 10-19 on expeditions around Kachemak Bay. Trip activities are varied and include backpacking, rock-climbing, paddle-boarding, and trail work. In the field, HoWL Instructors teach fundamental wilderness skills, such as fire-building and basic navigation, along with skills associated with the particular trip activities. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to: acting silly, teaching camp cooking skills, distribution of hi-fives, leading by example, and preparations/cleanup before and after every trip. HoWL instructors also support participants to be leaders themselves by teaching about the diversity of styles and personalities that make great leaders. HoWL is a challenge-by-choice, fun-oriented organization, and instructors are responsible for maintaining safe situations while allowing for participant decision-making and spontaneity.
