Overview
Position runs May 22-August 13 (with some flexibility)
Empower young Alaskans with the skills to thrive in the outdoors. HoWL instructors lead youth aged 10-19 on expeditions around Kachemak Bay. Trip activities are varied and include backpacking, rock-climbing, paddle boarding, and trail work.
With a co-leader, a HoWL instructor is responsible for preparing gear and food for expeditions. In the field, instructors teach fundamental wilderness skills, such as fire building and basic navigation, along with skills associated with the particular trip activities. HoWL instructors also support participants to be leaders themselves by teaching about the diversity of styles and personalities that make great leaders.
HoWL is a challenge-by-choice, fun-oriented organization, and instructors are responsible for maintaining safe situations while allowing for participant decision-making and spontaneity.
Qualifications:
• Wilderness First Responder Certified
• Experience with remote, multi-day backcountry expeditions
Required Skills:
• Ability to work and manage risks in semi-remote wilderness locations with limited to no facilities
• Competency in fundamental outdoor skills
• Compassion in teaching participants with varying skill levels and learning styles
• Ability to communicate and work closely with one other co-leader throughout the season
• Enthusiasm and adaptability
Preferred Skills:
• Competency in rock climbing preferable
• Experience or demonstrated desire to work with youth in outdoor settings
About Homer Wilderness Leaders
Homer Wilderness Leaders (HoWL) aims to facilitate positive outdoor experiences for Alaskan youth through fun-first adventures in local wilderness areas. Using outdoor experiential education, HoWL also seeks to empower local youth with the skills necessary to thrive and lead in wilderness settings. Teaching participants risk assessment and management tools is an important component of the HoWL philosophy.
