Overview
The John Dorr Nature Laboratory is one of the four campuses of the Horace Mann School, and is the school’s 320-acre outdoor education center. The school is an independent coeducational day school located in New York City. The Dorr Lab is located in Washington, Connecticut, a small community in the western part of the state. The rural setting of our campus provides an ideal setting for adventure and environmental education.
Programs are conducted for students in nursery years through twelfth grade, lasting from one to six days. All programs are designed to enhance the curriculum at each grade level and emphasize the cooperative aspects of learning and living.
Our programs cover a wide variety of experiential education programming, including ropes courses and rock climbing, canoeing, backpacking, environmental science, community building, group problem-solving, healthy risk-taking and more. The position requires a person who has experience in teaching and/or managing one or more of these areas, enjoys working with students of all ages, and is passionate about leading a collaborative community of educators. Other requirements:
– Minimum of a bachelor’s degree
– Wilderness First Responder certification, or the ability to obtain
– Ability to secure a CT Driver’s license with an “A” endorsement
This is a full-time administrative position overseeing the operations and programming of the Dorr campus. The person must be available starting July 1st, 2023. Salary is highly competitive and housing is provided. You can learn more about the school online at
