Overview

LEAP is a nonprofit organization based in Portland, OR and operating multi-day whitewater programs in Oregon and Idaho. Our mission is to create empowering opportunities for those facing adversity and trauma by providing wilderness programs. Our summer programs are multi-day whitewater river trips on the Salmon River in Idaho and the Deschutes River in Oregon. We offer reflective programming, community building, and opportunities for connection for individuals who often have felt isolated within their circumstances. All of our programs are no cost to our participants. Please visit our website to learn more about our program and the groups we serve: www.leapadventure.org

We operate primarily as an inflatable kayak (IK) program – where each person is paddling themselves down the river. The majority of our participants paddle themselves down the river in IKs with thorough instruction from our guiding and leadership staff. We also offer a paddle raft option for those who operate best sharing the challenges of the river as a team and/or to accommodate the needs of individuals.

We hire and train folks to be IK guides, as well as rowers for our gear and paddle rafts – and all guides support the facilitation of our program curriculum by leading games, reflective activities, and participating in or leading group discussions. Each summer, we form a small guide team, most of whom will work the entire season.

Guide positions include a moderate to heavy level of physical demand, including but not limited to: repetitive lifting, bending, reaching, and extended periods of continuous paddling/rowing as well as extended periods of standing/walking. We think river guiding with LEAP can be one of the most rewarding jobs, but involves plenty of hard work and can be physically and mentally demanding.

Depending on position, training may begin as early as mid-May and the season may run through mid-September, 2021
Preference may be given to guides who can commit to the entire season or who can work all programs in a specific location (Idaho or Oregon)

Minimum Qualifications:
• At least 18 years old, over 21 preferred
• Strong work ethic and team player
• Interest in learning natural history of the regions we operate in
• Familiarity and genuine interest in working with youth
• Interest and ability to connect with people of various ages and diverse backgrounds
• Current (or ability to obtain) Wilderness First Responder & CPR certifications
• Able to work up to a 3-month period with minimal time off + limited personal time
• Able to diligently comply with our zero-substance use policy while facilitating programs
• Able to attend pre-season training and orientation in Idaho and Oregon
• Able to lift 50lbs, loading/unloading gear, rigging rafts, river rescue, etc.
