At MCC, we focus on the growth of our participants, positively impacting our climate and environment, and transferable job skills. Crew Leaders and their crews will camp while working on physically demanding and essential natural resource and conservation projects on some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the Northern Rockies and Plains. Our crew leaders go through a leadership development program crafted over two decades to enhance their confidence, resilience, and technical capabilities.
These Wildland Restoration Teams will participate in a variety of innovative wetlands and habitat restoration projects, with a main focus on mesic restoration techniques including beaver mimicry and in-stream beaver-dam analog construction, a simple, effective, and non-invasive approach to riparian restoration. These crews will construct beaver mimicry structures (Low Tech Process Based Restoration) to effectively slow down and spread water over the landscape to expand critical habitat, mitigate wildfire, reduce invasive species and increase water availability in traditionally parched times of year. Studies have shown that these stream remediation efforts in the treated watershed mitigated the effects of drought, reduced the risk of catastrophic wildfire and flooding, improved water quality, expanded critical wildlife habitat and created a micro-climate with reduced air and water temperatures. Projects are often rigorous, requiring participants to carry a heavy backpack sprayer and working in hot weather across rugged terrain while wearing protective gear.
These crews work with a diverse range of stakeholders (private, government, and non-profit) in order to achieve large scale land conservation efforts with rural communities throughout the state of Montana. This is a great opportunity for current students, recent college graduates, or anyone who has an interest in restoration to gain practical field experience in a rapidly growing area of conservation, with a strong potential for future career paths.

Living Allowance: $1,120 biweekly before taxes are taken out

High school degree, GED, or willingness to work towards obtaining a GED
US Citizen, National or lawful permanent resident
Ability to pass a National Service Criminal History Check
Ability to eventually hike 3-20 miles per day in terrain that can be steep, rocky or uneven, often wearing a 45lb backpack while carrying tools and sometimes backpacking with full packs of 60 – 70lbs
Ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly and use hand and power tools
Effective written and oral communication skills
Ability to obtain Wilderness Advanced First Aid/CPR training. (Training is reimbursable to allotted amount/ MCC provides training)
Demonstrates desire to serve the community and the environment
Embraces willingness to work long, hard hours in all weather conditions; ability to be away on overnight trips for up to 10 days at a time
Commitment to completing term; available for duration of entire term of service
Valid driver’s license, ability to pass a Motor Vehicle Records check
21 years old on the start date of the program
About Montana Conservation Corps
Montana Conservation Corps' (MCC) promise is to ignite the potential - for leadership, for service, for action and resilience - that exists in every person. Founded in 1991, MCC is a private, nonprofit organization that serves Montana (and neighboring states), with offices in Bozeman, Helena, Missoula, and Kalispell. MCC receives Federal grant money through the Corporation for National & Community Service, which is used to provide participant stipends and education awards, as well as to support our programming. By weaving together leadership development, teamwork, civic engagement, and work-skills training with direct service to our lands and communities, MCC helps members develop competencies for achieving success. In return, our corps members protect amazing wild places. While most of the work we accomplish is in the field, our main goal is not to build trails but to help members develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to be active citizens in their community.
