Overview

Reporting to the Director of Operations, the Assistant Field Instructor is primarily responsible for implementing and teaching the organization’s curricula during summer courses. This individual will also assist the Lead Field Instructor in aspects of the organization’s operations, including planning and logistical elements of the courses. The position includes a significant amount of outdoor work, occasional travel, and requires a commitment to the organization and the mission. This position is temporary and seasonal and will primarily help with preparation and execution of our summer programs. Qualifications:

Possess a strong understanding of evidence-based prevention models for youth and have solid therapeutic communication and rapport-building skills.
Be a competent and inspirational leader, facilitator, teacher, mentor, role model, and catalyst.
Be comfortable in the wilderness and risk aware.
Be an independent, efficient, organized, and flexible self-starter.

Required Skills:

Be at least 21 years of age.
Have experience working with vulnerable youth populations in an outdoor experiential setting.
Wilderness First Responder & CPR Certification/AK Driver’s License. Background clearance including the following are required: FBI, Alaska criminal clearance, driving record, and National Sex Offender Registry clearance. Degree in outdoor recreation, adventure therapy, education, psychology, social work, counseling, or related discipline. Be capable of strenuous physical activity.

Preferred Skills:

Have a core competency of sound judgment and the ability to respond appropriately to varying unforeseen situations and circumstances, and be safety-minded with an understanding of risk assessment and management principles.
Must be able to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time while maintaining a positive and safe attitude for our participants.
Have experience leading backpacking trips for multiple days in a row in a leadership role.
