Wilderness Trip Leader on the Missinaibi River in Ontario
We are looking for a dynamic, engaging person with experience leading extended canoe trips in Quebec and/or Ontario with young women teenagers. This person would lead a 30+-day canoe trip in Canada with an experienced trip assistant on the Missinaibi River from Lake Superior to James Bay. She would be familiar with or willing to learn to trip Songadeewin style tripping which includes using ABS canoes, wooden wangans, tumplines, cooking with fires, chopping and sawing wood, reading and running whitewater, engaging trippers in all aspects of the trip and forging positive relationships with the group while encouraging them to develop as individuals working as a team.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
• 3-5 years of experience planning and leading extended canoe trips in Canada
• Experience working and teaching youth ages 15 to 18
• Experience working with girls in group settings preferred
• Experience teaching and leading whitewater canoeing
• An understanding or willingness to learn Songa tripping style
• WFR certified or ability to get certification ($650 bonus for current certification)
• Availability for 5 to 6 wks this summer

Required Skills:

Experience leading extended whitewater expeditions, able to portage an Old Town Tripper and carry heavy wooden boxes over rough trails, certification in WFR or ability to get certified before the trip, be fully vaccinated and updated for Covid-19, experience working with all female groups and teenagers

Preferred Skills:

Comfortable working with teenage women who've all known each other since they were much younger (They each did one of two 17-day trips last summer.) Be able to share a genuine love for wilderness canoe tripping and travel through wild country. Have experience in building a sense of community and that the trip is about contributing to the success of the whole group not just individual trippers.

About Songadeewin of Keewaydin

We are a traditional girls' residential camp specializing in wilderness canoe tripping. Our primary campsite is in Vermont and trips for campers ages 8 - 16 leave to travel in Vermont, the Adirondacks of NY, Maine, New Hampshire and Canada. Each month a camper is at Songa she does a trip with the youngest starting with four-day trips and the oldest tripping for 17 days. In addition to our tripping program we have a full in-camp program of activities and special events.
