Overview
Backpacking guides needed August 14th-19th, 2023.
Rate is $170/day – total contract value of $1,020.
Trip will take place in Santa Fe National Forest – exact location TBD, fire season dependent.
Act as mentor to new student leaders during six-day freshman orientation backpacking trip. Our leaders will have gone through a 12-day leadership course, a WFR, and a three-day re-orientation backpacking trip prior to stepping into the field as leaders for our new student wilderness outing. This position is intended to serve more as a safety net for those new leaders than as a role requiring formal instruction. Guides will act as a sounding board for difficult decisions and a resource that our student leaders can draw upon if needed.
Qualifications:
Current WFR
2+ years of experience as lead guide for commercial/educational/therapeutic backpacking outings greater than four days in length.
Required Skills:
Ability to carry multi-day pack load for five days through steep, mountainous terrain, at elevations of 9-12k feet.
Expert ability to instruct participants in standard hard skills such as site selection, map reading, shelter construction, stove use, etc.
Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with group of college-aged students
Sound grasp of risk management concepts and practices
