The Student Conservation Association (SCA), Americas #1 conservation service organization, seeks qualified applicants to lead, educate, and inspire Seattle-area high school students.
Training Dates: June 12 to June 22 (Paid mandatory training. Location TBD)
Program Dates: July 10 to August 25
Location (City and State): Seattle, WA
Primary Responsibilities:
Lead, supervise, transport, and mentor a team of 5 high school youth, ages 14-19, for seven weeks (Mon-Fri, 7:30am-4pm). Complete an assortment of hands-on conservation projects including trail construction and rehabilitation, general trail management, natural resource enhancements, and invasive species removal across multiple Seattle Parks and Recreation sites and the Washington Park Arboretum. Plan and lead weekly educational field days and integrate career exploration, leadership development, and team building. Administrative and reporting duties are required, including data management, photo documentation, and youth assessments. Crew leaders will also be expected to facilitate an environmental education curriculum, which will be provided.
The leader will travel with the crew outside of the Seattle metro area to participate in a 3-day/2-night camping recreation and work trip. The trip will take place from August 2 to August 4.
Crew leaders will conduct daily health screening questionnaires with their members and monitor all work activities to ensure that participants are following COVID-19 safety protocols.
Specifically, the Crew Leader will:
Act as a Crew Supervisor, by facilitating teamwork, managing field-based tasks, and guiding crew dynamics
Serve as an Advisor, by training members in technical conservation work skills, mentoring personal and professional development, and teaching environmental stewardship
Act as a Project Manager, by communicating with agency park partners, ensuring successful and timely completion of work projects, and upholding a positive representation of SCA
Perform tasks as a Program Administrator, by organizing logistics, completing documentation, managing a budget, and communicating with SCA staff
Leader Qualifications:
Experience working with youth or young adults, teaching or environmental education a plus
Experience with conservation work skills or related skills preferredi.e., trail maintenance, trail construction, habitat restoration, chainsaw, carpentry, landscaping, and gardening
Ability to perform manual, physical labor for up to 8 hours per day, exposed to the elements, and must occasionally lift and/or move 40 pounds or more
Basic First Aid and CPR certification required.
Must be able to attend Crew Leader training: June 12 to June 22
Must be a minimum of 21 years of age
Must have the ability to legally work in the US
Must have a valid drivers license for 3+ years and MVR that meets SCA standards
Must be able to meet SCAs criminal background check standards
