The Community School of Mount Desert Island seeks a dynamic and enthusiastic educator to support our multi-age grades 3-5 Intertidal Class in partnership with the Class Lead Teacher. This position begins August 2022.

The Community School nurtures, challenges, and empowers children by using the local community and natural world as our classroom to creatively explore all subject areas through a holistic, Place-based curriculum. Our academics are rooted in what is developmentally appropriate for each child. Small class sizes allow for a balance of collaborative and collective learning as well as individualized attention. Our Expedition unit is interdisciplinary, with a focus in the sciences and social studies. The Math Workshop, (based on Eureka Math) and Language Arts Workshop (based on the Units of Study curriculum) use active and engaging learning to explore math, reading, and writing. A weekly Outing affords off-campus study and continued collaboration and stewardship with local people and places. Weekly specialty classes in Music, Handwork, and Nature Journaling complement the curriculum and are taught by skilled educators within the local community.

Salary Range: $30,000 – $36,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications, with benefits to include health and dental insurance.

A State of Maine Teaching certificate is preferred, but not required.

Due to the active nature of our program, current certification in Wilderness First Aid (WFA) or higher is required of all teaching staff and will be provided during in-service training.

Located along a tidal creek and salt marsh in Somesville, Maine, the school occupies a historic farmhouse surrounded by field and forest. We are a state-certified independent school, incorporating a variety of teaching methods in our Place-Based model, cultivating a sense of self, place and community.
