Overview

The High Desert Center Gap Year Programs in Paonia, CO is looking to hire an additional lead staff for their fall semester gap year program. Successful applicants will be strong role models, capable of loving participants up, while also having those (sometimes challenging) direct learning conversations. Big parts of the job include coaching participants in their decisions, in their personal growth goals, and in networking with other inspiring people. Multiple years of experience in positions of leading and managing other people is a big plus. Other skills that are beneficial but not absolutely necessary include: sustainable living, outdoor leadership/backpacking, wilderness first responder, general spirit of adventure, partner dance and music, community living experience, travel in the Southwest and Mexico, and practical life skills. Much of our curriculum is flexible, and we will build around your skills and passions when they match the interests of participants.

Staff Orientation begins August 13 and the program ends November 21. Staff live with or close to the group for the entire time. Two days a week off is the goal, but it doesn’t always happen, especially during the last six weeks when we are on the road. Pay is $7,500-10,000 DOE with a small travel stipend and most expenses covered.

We laugh and hug a lot, value choice and spontaneity, and put a premium on those memorable, transformative moments.

About The High Desert Center

The High Desert Center provides Gap Year Programs for freedom and adventure loving young adults. We tend to be homespun and informal. We dumpster dive and skinny dip and love spontaneous adventures. We inspire rather than coerce. Our Gap Year programs teach the skills that change your experience, like how to make everyday life an adventure, how to take care of yourself, how to make a difference, how to connect. We offer participants the chance to be seen and accepted for who you already are, the chance to become who you want to be, and the chance to see the world for what it is and what it could be.
