Overview
The Overnight Camps Program Coordinator is responsible for the safe and effective execution of educational and recreational programming for Youth Programs at The Mountaineers Seattle Branch. Specifically, this position will oversee preparation for and facilitation of overnight summer camp programs in the field and at The Mountaineers Outdoor Centers. This position will work closely with the volunteers who run these sites, building relationships and establishing protocols with both youth program and outdoor center priorities in mind. During the school year, this position oversees the Mini Mountaineers cohort in Seattle.
Key Responsibilities:
Planning & Preparation
– Work closely with Outdoor Center Volunteers to design and schedule overnight summer camp sessions
– Facilitate online registration of programs annually
– Market upcoming camp sessions across resources and platforms
– Update and maintain outward facing website and internal database for Seattle Camp programs
– Oversee and organize programmatic elements of Mini Mountaineers
– Ensure supplies are ordered as needed
– Ensure outside vendors and/or transportation vendors are booked as needed
– Recruit, train, schedule, and mentor staff and volunteers in program delivery
– Ensure all programming is within the policies and guidelines for Mountaineers Youth Programs
– Work closely with Camps Program Manager to plan and budget for Seattle Camp programs
Communications
– Serve as first point of contact for all parent, volunteer, and youth communications
– Serve as point of contact for summer partner and vendor communications
– Serve as point of contact for staff communications through the summer season
– Communicate frequently and clearly to staff, volunteers and parents through website, phone call, and email
– Ensure all trip and activity data is recorded and accurate in Salesforce
Program Delivery
– Co-facilitate staff & volunteer training with youth education team
– Coordinate set-up and take-down for each session of overnight summer camp
– Oversee and support seasonal overnight camp team
– Act as the “face of camp” at all times, including
– Facilitating check-in and check-out
– Running all-camp activities daily together with field staff
– Running daily meetings, debriefs
– Providing a leadership presence throughout the camp day
– Collaborate with lodge committee and volunteers to maintain and operate facility during camp sessions
– Instruct and facilitate overnight camp programs
– Instruct Mini Mountaineers programs during the school year
– Available to instruct for other Education team programs, as needed
Qualifications:
- Experience in summer camp programs, specifically overnight and residential settings
- Proficiency in the following basic climbing skills and/or willingness to learn:
- Ability to safely lead sport climbs at a 5.6/5.7 level
- Ability to build climbing anchors
- Ability to rappel
- Self-motivated with ability to carry out projects independently and work within a team
- Proficiency with word processing and other applications
- Current First Aid & CPR or willingness to obtain
Required Skills:
- Cultural humility and desire to work with people of all races, ages, genders, abilities and economic backgrounds.
- Experience in outdoor education and/or recreation programs
- Experience working with youth
- Ability to pass a national criminal background and sex offender check
