Program Overview: Led by the Colorado Alliance for Environmental Education (CAEE), the Environmental Education Corps (eeCorps) AmeriCorps Program places AmeriCorps members at organizations throughout Colorado to focus on increasing environmental literacy for PreK-12 students and implementing the goals outlined in the Colorado Environmental Education Plan. eeCorps works directly with teachers, schools, and environmental education providers to support them in expanding reach and increasing impact of EE programming, while providing access to equitable learning experiences for all PreK-12 students. eeCorps members provide direct service to improve outcomes in Environmental Stewardship and Education. AmeriCorps provides opportunities to improve lives and foster civic engagement all across the country.

The Member will serve with The Nature Connection, whose mission is to eliminate the barriers to getting outside by providing fun, active, and educational outdoor experiences for youth and families in our community. The Nature Connection is a Delta County School District initiative, offering school-year and summer programs, youth pathways into outdoor careers, and place developments to get kids outside in the community. Some of the specific programs offered include cross country skiing for students on the Grand Mesa National Forest and mountain bike instruction for youth across the Western Slope.

Service Position Summary: This is a half-time eeCorps position that will serve from January-July 2022. With the support of eeCorps members, The Nature Connection will launch a new program that aims to help students build positive relationships, self-confidence and teamwork through rock climbing. During the summer, members will plan and organize community climbing nights and serve as the rock climbing lead for summer camps and adventure programs hosted by The Nature Connection. eeCorps members will additionally help facilitate other outdoor programs at The Nature Connection including gear lending aimed to empower local teachers with the opportunity to take their students outside, core programs such as Learn to Bike and Skis for Kids, as well as family programs.

Experience bouldering or rock climbing preferred, not required. Training will be provided.
Experience backpacking and wilderness camping
Basic familiarity with recreational rock climbing/bouldering and willingness to learn how to safely instruct participants in climbing wall safety
Current CPR-first aid certification required or will be provided; Wilderness First Aid or Wilderness First Responder preferred
Ability to drive a vehicle off-road, in snow/inclement weather
Experience driving a loaded

Required Skills:

(Climbing Program): Assist staff in developing the curriculum for and implementation of the Climbing program for 7th and 8th graders in partnership with school district teachers.
