Job Summary:

Trail crew leaders work alongside, train and supervise the Wilder Bunch, a trail crew made up of local high school students (15-18 year-olds) in building singletrack mountain biking and hiking trails around Delta County. Applicants with a positive attitude, who are excited about introducing kids to the love of trail sports, responsible recreation and stewardship of singletrack are highly encouraged to apply. Trail crew leaders will work under the direction of the Nature Connection Leadership Team to help connect the community to the outdoors through improved access to local trails.


Ensure the success of trail construction projects at The Nature Connection headquarters in Hotchkiss as well as projects around Delta County.
Position requires prior trail construction or relevant experience (2 seasons preferred)
Attention to detail
Experience coaching or mentoring youth, team building skills
Skills in carpentry preferred
Ability to lift 50 lbs unassisted and 100 lbs assisted
Safely operate hand tools
Drive a 4×4 truck and trailer
Perform manual labor in summer weather conditions (temperatures above 90+ degrees)
Due to the potential for extreme heat in the middle of the day and possible weather events, position may require early mornings and/or evening work
Other duties as assigned

Openings: 2 positions available

Compensation: $13-$16 per hour depending on experience, responsibilities and qualifications

Location: The Nature Connection in Hotchkiss, Confluence Park in Delta and other locations around Delta County

Effective Date: Open until filled; Priority given to applications received by March 15


Start date tentatively May 23, 2021
Schedule is typically a 32-hours/week Monday through Thursday with paid training starting mid-May
Part-time work may be available starting as early as mid April

Preferred Qualifications:

Wilderness First Aid, CPR or other medical training
Experience working with the US Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, or National Park Service, Youth Conservation Corps or other relevant experience
Experience in tool and equipment maintenance (sharpening, sanding, oiling, re-handling)

Required Skills:

Minimum requirements:

18 years and older
Drivers license with clean record
Trail crew or comparable outdoor work (ex: farm and ranch, construction)
