Overview

We are seeking committed instructors for our high school orientation program running August 19-29th, in the Indian and Lost Creek Wilderness areas. Instructors at The Watershed School work directly with Lead Educators and the Director of Experiential Programs to create a welcoming yet challenging environment for students during our 8-day orientation backpacking trip. In doing so, Instructors focus heavily on creating a supportive group culture that fosters communication and understanding while helping advisory teams manage risk appropriately.

Qualifications:

Must be 21 years of age or older.
Must be available from August 19-29th. Exceptions may be made on a case-by-case basis.
Must possess a current Wilderness First Responder or Wilderness Advanced First Aid Certification.
Must have one or more years of comparable experience in experiential education, risk management, and/or outdoor skills.

Required Skills:

Able to work effectively with high school students who may have never camped before.
Must be sufficiently fit to participate in all duties as assigned and maintain ample energy and focus to aid students and staff.
Ability to manage physical and emotional safety or student groups in hazardous environments (i.e., rough terrain) and manage emergencies.
Able to model and promote a culture of safety.
Able to take the initiative and work collaboratively.
Able to clearly communicate with students and staff.

Preferred Skills:

Ability to facilitate activities, lessons, and discussions, including presenting engaging lessons that meet learners' needs and allow for transference.
Ability to effectively assess student needs and facilitate lessons, activities, and discussions to meet student needs and course outcomes.
Able to provide clear, effective, and timely feedback to students, educators, instructors, and administration.
