The Valley Rock Gym (VRG) is a dynamic and multifaceted gym focused on climbing, community, education, and wellness. We are seeking a driven, creative Head Route Setter who is excited to lead the route setting team and become part of the VRG community. This person will be integral to VRG’s mission to create a space where people of all ages, identities and abilities can come to socialize, learn, move, and grow – as climbers and as individuals.
The Head Route Setter will be responsible for managing route setting staff, managing climbing wall related projects, and working in collaboration with managers to ensure the highest quality experience for climbers. The Head Route Setter is expected to be a competent leader, friendly, open, hard working, and approachable.
Team Management: Work with the leadership team to hire, train, and schedule route setters; Supervise route setting team; Support setting staff with assessment, training, and dynamic leadership; Ensure risk management policy compliance during setting including use of appropriate personal protective equipment

Program & Wall Management: Supervise route setting, stripping and cleaning activities; Ensure appropriate route quantity and quality to VRG standards; Lead/teach community setting clinics; Maintain climbing wall cleanliness and functionality; Manage supply inventory

General: Communicate with the leadership team to understand and support company goals and objectives; Demonstrate a commitment to principles of justice, equity, and inclusivity

This position has unique environmental and physical demand requirements. Applicants should be comfortable working at height and moving up and down a climbing wall safely; setting routes on a rope; walking or standing on uneven surfaces; balancing, kneeling, pulling, pushing, and grasping objects on a regular basis; repeatedly lifting, moving, and carrying up to 50 lbs of weight on a regular basis.

Work Hours:
15 – 20 hours total per week
One 8-10 hour shift per week required
Occasional availability on nights and weekends for special events
