Job Description:
The Deckhand Educator AmeriCorps Program aboard Denis Sullivan is a year-long practicum in sail training, teaching at sea, and community-building with youth. As an AmeriCorps crew member working and living aboard the vessel, you will receive exceptional benefits, along with making an impactful contribution to the world. The goal of this program is to train and support excellent maritime educators and role models for World Ocean School’s student programs.

Program & Itinerary:
World Ocean School exists to provide students of all backgrounds with immersive opportunities to learn to care for themselves, their crew, and their ship, becoming vessels of change in the world they inherit. The organization uses the schooners Roseway and Denis Sullivan as platforms for this mission.

December- March: The vessel operates out of St. Croix in the USVI. There we carry out our mission through week long school programs and overnight trips around the USVIs and Puerto Rico.

March-April: The vessel sails to New England

May-September – Day programs and overnight trips with middle school to college aged students. A typical overnight program is ten days in length allowing for extensive sailing around New England.

October – November- Sail south to the USVI.

Required Skills:

No previous sailing or tall ship experience required. Training provided on board.

Preferred Skills:

Passionate about experiential education. Comfortable living in a community setting.
