Program Overview
Balarat Outdoor Education is a Denver Public Schools program offering experiential learning opportunities in the outdoors for DPS students. Our programs integrate hands-on science, living history, and adventure-based learning. Throughout the school year, we serve over 10,000 students across 430 classes with day trips and 2–3 day overnight excursions. Since 1969, Balarat has been a vital part of the DPS curriculum, offering powerful experiences that connect students with nature and each other.

Job Summary
We’re hiring full-time, school-year educators. Facilitators are an integral part of a collaborative team that provides 3rd, 5th, and high school students with safe, inclusive, and enriching outdoor experiences. This position includes overnight supervision of 5th grade students at the Balarat Outdoor Education Center near Boulder and day programming with 3rd graders at Genesee Mountain Park near Denver.
Facilitators work closely with classroom teachers to deliver outdoor education aligned with program goals, lead student activities, and help ensure a meaningful and positive experience for all participants. This salaried position includes DPS benefits and summers off.

Key Responsibilities
Facilitate a wide variety of program activities for elementary and high school students
Lead groups of up to 35 students in outdoor settings, including overnight stays
Work outdoors in all weather conditions and walk up to six miles daily
Collaborate with a team of educators to plan, evaluate, and improve programming
Demonstrate cultural competency and work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds
Participate in regular feedback processes to support individual and team growth
Uphold and model the mission and values of Balarat and Denver Public Schools

Qualifications:

Experience in facilitation (e.g., briefing, debriefing, leading group activities)
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work on diverse teams and build inclusive learning environments
Commitment to equity and understanding of how race, class, and gender impact access to outdoor experiences
Ability to lift and carry at least 20 pounds
Familiarity with Google Drive and general tech proficiency
Self-directed, reliable, and mission-driven

Balarat Outdoor Education is a part of Denver Public Schools and offers a range of programs that provide a balance of hands-on science activities, living history units, field-based exploration, and adventure programming. We operate throughout the school year, offering two and three-day student residential programs, in addition to day trips. Balarat excursions have become an integral part of the Denver Public Schools’ curriculum. Balarat serves over 430 classes, or approximately 10,000 students, each year and has been part of Denver Public Schools since 1969.
