Overview
Broadreach Adventures offers immersive, international programs for middle and high school students. Since 1993, students have traveled to over 40 countries on Broadreach trips. Our programs include liveaboard sailing programs and land based programs around the world. This position correlates to our land based programs, focused on ecology, wildlife and conservation, and based primarily in Costa Rica, Ecuador and Bahamas.
Our mission is to challenge and inspire participants to learn, grow, build new skills and become better global citizens through hands-on discovery, travel and interaction with the world’s oceans, ecosystems and wildlife.
Broadreach Instructors are expected to educate, mentor and inspire students every day. Instructors will supervise students for the duration of their trip, including meals with students, supervision throughout the day and in the evening. This is a 24/7 position with limited free time or personal space.
Broadreach Instructors should be energetic and empathetic role models who excel in building meaningful relationships with young adults.
Responsibilities include:
– Mentor and travel with a group of students while guiding them through program objectives.
– Facilitate inclusive group dynamics and maintain an inclusive community atmosphere.
– Lead games and team building activities to create and foster positive group dynamics.
– Assist with leading discussions and giving talks about local culture and environment.
– Confirm logistics with local outfitters for adventure based activities and meals.
– Demonstrate respectful travel mindset and model this for students.
– Ensure student’s safety and monitor physical and emotional well being of the group and manage student medical issues that may arise.
– Communicate daily with HQ to relay updates about student experiences.
– Track trip budget and finances.
– Problem solve and make decisions for your group with guidance from HQ.
– Some programs may require instructors to drive students in a 9 passenger van
Programs are typically co-ed and each group will have 8-12 students with two instructors. Program Instructors will be based in Costa Rica, Ecuador or Bahamas, final location will be based on skills and experience.
Our instructors will lead programs that range from 12 to 21 days, and instructors will typically lead 2-3 sessions throughout the summer. Instructor contracts include a travel day to their program location before students arrive, prep time and a day to debrief after students depart.
Instructors are required to attend staff training in Raleigh, NC, in NC the second week of June and then will lead programs with potential dates in June, July and into the first week of August.
Qualifications:
- Experience working with Middle or High School students in a classroom setting, summer camp or trip leading capacity.
- Wilderness First Responder certification (or willing to get certified before summer 2025).
- Group facilitation skills and understanding group dynamics.
- Ability to speak and understand Spanish in verbal and written form, to interact with local outfitters.
Preferred Skills:
Preferred Skills & Experience:
- Experience leading teens on multi-day programs in outdoor environments or outside of the U.S. or extensive personal travel in our program locations.
- Ability to lead multiple sessions will increase the likelihood of placement.
- College degree preferred.
- Some programs require a valid driver’s license and the ability to drive a manual car.
- Preference given to individuals with personal travel experience or experience leading trips in our current program locations.
