Heart of Oregon Corps is hiring for a qualified Crew Leader with motivation, professionalism, talent, and passion for empowering and inspiring positive change in the lives of young people. This seasonal position is scheduled to operate from April 4 – October 14, 2022.

At Heart of Oregon Corps, 16-24 year old local young people with barriers to success improve their own lives while gaining job skills on projects that improve the community. Heart of Oregon Corps is a large regional non-profit that operates 6 youth training programs. This Crew Leader position will be working with our seasonal AmeriCorps trail crews. Field projects for this position focus primarily on trail construction, maintenance, or remediation. Additional projects may include fire fuels reduction, fence building, urban and park landscaping maintenance, manual and chemical invasive weed treatments, and other conservation interventions to support the health of public lands in Central Oregon. We’re looking for an experienced Crew Leader who can confidently coordinate and implement trails projects using standard industry equipment and methods. This Crew Leader is responsible for training, supervising, and mentoring young adults from a wide variety of backgrounds, while completing hands-on, labor-intensive conservation projects to a high standard of quality. Projects will be comprised of day and camping trips. This Crew Leader must be comfortable planning and implementing overnight trips for up to 10 members.

This position supervises a crew of 5-8 crew members at a project site. A Crew Leader must balance operating a safe job site, training of both hard and soft job skills, and mentoring the young adults to develop good work habits and persist through personal challenges towards their long-term goals. The Crew Leader must also have a sincere desire to assist young adults to succeed and develop self-confidence and team-building skills. Crew leaders must follow and enforce HOC’s comprehensive COVID-19 Safety Protocols.

This seasonal position is located in Prineville, Oregon with project sites in Ochoco National Forest and Crooked River National Grassland, with other sites (as assigned) throughout Central Oregon. The Crew Leader is responsible for safely transporting the crew on a daily basis to and from project sites. Regular overnight camp trips are required during this season. The anticipated schedule will include 15 weeks of day projects and 13 weeks of camping projects, subject to change depending on weather, crew size, and partner needs. Housing is NOT provided outside of camping project weeks. A current driver’s license and a good driving record is required. The position is supervised by the Program Director.

Starting wage range for the position is $19.25/hour (firm). During camping weeks, up to 14 hours of overtime. This is a full-time, temporary (seasonal), hourly staff position. Limited benefits include sick leave after 90 days

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 2 years of demonstrated work experience in related field work (completing hands-on projects), supervising teams, volunteers, or students. Minimum education required is a high school diploma/GED equivalent. (Bachelor’s degree preferred). Candidates with demonstrated technical trailbuilding experience, S212 Faller B or C chainsaw certifications, crosscut certifications, and WFA/WFR certifications are preferred.
