Middle School Language Arts Teacher
Highland School
Warrenton, VA

Founded in 1928, Highland School is an independent, co-educational, college preparatory
day school serving approximately 500 students in grades PK-12, including 140 middle school
students in grades 5-8. Highland prepares students to thrive, lead, and serve in a diverse and
dynamic world, developing essential skills and character by challenging them with a dynamic and demanding academic and co-curricular program.

The Middle School (MS) Language Arts teacher reports to the Middle School Director and works collaboratively with other teachers in the Middle School. The Middle School places a strong emphasis on habits of learning, which include growth mindset, personal responsibility, communication, and organization. The current Language Arts curriculum fosters student growth as readers, writers, and thinkers. Students read texts from a variety of genres, and they are asked to write for a breadth of audiences and purposes. Students engage critically with texts by learning new vocabulary, identifying biases, and deciphering a text’s subtextual meaning. In their written work, students study grammatical concepts like parts of speech and syntactical agreement between subjects and verbs.
