Lead a group of 8-20 cancer survivors, caregivers, and volunteers in a conditioning program based on a 12-week series of weekly hikes. Hikes get harder each week, and culminate in climbing Grays Peak (for the advanced group) or hiking to Blue Lake in the Indian Peaks Wilderness (intermediate group). Provide participants with encouragement and coaching via phone/text/email in between hikes. Conduct reconnaissance hikes as needed. (Recommended hikes begin in Jefferson/Boulder county foothills, move up into higher Front Range locations. Mileage allowance provided.) Educate participants on leave no trace principles, hiking etiquette and safety, etc.
Hours will vary from week to week, increasing as length/difficulty of hikes increases. Overall, position is roughly 20 hours/week. Reconnaissance hikes and coaching may be done any time during week; scheduled hikes occur on Saturdays with Sunday rain dates. Hikes begin May 22 and end August 7. Awards/completion ceremony August 15.
Following conclusion of the hiking program, upon mutual interest, this position may also lead 2-night retreats for survivors and caregivers to Tenth Mountain Huts or in Rocky Mountain National Park (group will be based at YMCA conference center in Estes Park).
Pay: $15-$18/hour, depending on experience and qualifications.
BS or equivalent.
3 plus years experience outdoor guiding.
Medical certification: WFR or above
Proof of Covid-19 vaccination.
Demonstrate competence with map/compass, GPS, routefinding. WFR or greater. Solid outdoor leadership skills.
Successful candidates will, in addition to above, demonstrate compassion and empathy, and willingness to support and encourage participants to achieve their goals.
