Outdoor Education Program Coordinator
Full-Time – Permanent
August 2023
Main Responsibilities:
Reporting directly to the Director of Experiential Education and the Heads of School (Elementary, Middle and Senior), the Outdoor Education (OE) Program Coordinator is responsible for the following:
Philosophy, Design and Planning:
Develops a guiding vision for K-12 outdoor education programming that is integral to the Selwyn House Experiential Education (EE) framework and that is aligned with the school’s mission, vision, values and educational philosophy.
Designs OE programming that is relevant and responsive to the pedagogical needs of each school (Elementary, Middle and Senior) while ensuring a balance of safety, discovery, fun and planned risk.
Contributes to the vision, decision making and design of: school green spaces, gardens, tree planting, outdoor classrooms, and possible future OE facilities acquired by the school.
Team and Department Responsibilities
Participates as an integral member of the Department of Experiential Education.
Manages all aspects of hiring, training and supervision of OE staff.
Creates a clear structure for staffing needs and requirements for all OE programming.
Risk Management
Responsible for all risk management protocols as they pertain to OE programming, in consultation with the Director of Experiential Education.
Develops and maintains standard operating procedure manuals for all OE programs.
Outdoor Education Programs
Attends programs where necessary to provide direction to teachers, assess desired outcomes, and ensure compliance.
Promotes environmental literacy and stewardship within programs and throughout cross-curricular opportunities.
Actively pursues a deep understanding of place with an emphasis on decolonization and infuses this knowledge into programming.
Administrative Responsibilities
Manages OE related budgets within the Department of Experiential Education
Reviews quotes and contracts, makes reservations and manages follow up and commun
Qualifications:
Bachelor of Education preferred
Extensive experience in outdoor programming and outdoor learning environments with children/youth
Specialization/expertise in one or more areas of outdoor programming
Leadership experience in managing a team, budgets and developing experiential programs
Wilderness First Responder certification
Outdoor Council of Canada Instructor certification
Bilingualism (French and English) is an asset
