Position: Camp Wa-Ya Wilderness Director

Overview: Wa-Ya Outdoor Institute is hiring for an energetic, innovative Wilderness Director to develop and lead our overnight kayaking and backpacking Adventure Camp trips for teens. This program has an educational focus on inspiring and practicing environmental leadership, outdoor skills, and mindfulness pursuits. We also offer scholarships and tend to serve many at-risk youth in this program. This was a new program for our organization last year and holds great opportunity for growth and creative development for someone who wants to put their expertise to great use!

Currently Wa-Ya runs a 10-week summer camp program with both Day Camp offerings for ages 6-13 and Overnight Backpacking & Kayak trips for ages 13-17. This position will focus on developing, planning, and leading the Adventure Camp program, working closely with both the Program Director and Lead Adventure Camp Instructor. This position requires experience working with youth and leading group trips in the backcountry. It is important to note that this position will also act as an Assistant Director to our Day Camp, assisting our Program Director and providing additional program support, especially during the week when overnight trips are out.

This position is responsible for assisting with the formulation, implementation, and management of Camp Wa-Ya’s summer camp programs and will set the tone for camp staff culture and engage in a culturally integrated environment, where Wa-Ya’s values of respect, diversity, equity, and inclusion are practiced. The position routinely engages with and works at the direction of the Program Director and engaged Board members.

This position is a full-time seasonal position from May-September. Compensation for this position is $19.00/hour and is expected to work 40 hours a week. We will also cover WFR/WFA and/or other certifications for the right candidate.
