Overview

HistoriCorps and Shoshone National Forest are seeking volunteers of all skill levels to help rehabilitate TWO historic structures: Anderson Lodge, and the Sunlight Ranger Station. This is an excellent professional development opportunity for adventurous spirits to learn about historic building preservation.

Anderson Lodge – August 10-16: We will be restoring the historic Anderson Lodge, 40 miles southwest of Cody, WY. HistoriCorps and our volunteer work crew will be harvesting timber for shoring materials, quarrying rock on-site for repairs, reestablishing and improving the historic drainage trenches and spring box, and installing French drains. Due to the remote location, this project will involve a 7-mile hike to the project site with pack mules carrying gear and tools.

Sunlight Ranger Station – four week-long volunteer sessions available between July 28 and August 23: Sunlight Ranger Station was constructed in 1934 as part of President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal. This year, HistoriCorps will be working on the caretaker’s residence, the ranger residence, and the garage. Volunteers can expect to replace logs, roofing, repair and rehabilitate windows, jack and reset a porch corner, and more.

Qualifications:

HistoriCorps welcomes but does not require any experience in the trades; mentorship and all necessary tools are provided. Volunteer sessions are typically scheduled Sunday evening through Friday morning, although volunteers at Anderson Lodge will need to arrive Saturday to account for hiking time in. Volunteers can expect all meals to be provided by expert field staff.
