Overview
As a Canoeing Activity Counselor, you will be part of our waterfront program, teaching campers of all ages the fundamentals of paddling on Pleasant Lake. This is a dual role: you’ll spend your days on the water sharing your technical expertise and your evenings fostering a close-knit community as a cabin counselor. We are looking for someone, preferably female due to housing, who can turn a “J-stroke” lesson into the highlight of a camper’s day while upholding Arcadia’s 110-year tradition of outdoor excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
– Assist in planning and leading daily canoeing activity periods for groups of 8–12 campers.
– Teach skills ranging from basic tandem maneuvers to advanced solo paddling and canoe safety.
– Serve as a cabin counselor, participating in all aspects of camp life, including meals, evening programs, and special events.
– Ensure the safety of all participants by maintaining a watchful eye and adhering to strict waterfront protocols.
Qualifications:
- Strong personal background in canoeing and a love for being on the water.
- Experience working with children in a teaching, coaching, or mentoring capacity.
- Current Lifeguard with CPR-Pro certification (or ability to arrive June 7th to take our lifeguard course).
- Completion of at least one year of college or equivalent life experience.
Required Skills:
Technical Proficiency: Ability to demonstrate and explain various paddling strokes and rescue techniques.
Safety Mindset: Constant awareness of lake conditions and group dynamics.
Adaptability: The energy to transition from a technical instructor on the water to a supportive mentor in the cabin.
Preferred Skills:
- Knowledge of canoe games and creative ways to engage younger campers.
