Overview

The Camp Lifeguards oversee all waterfront activities, including water safety, and swim tests. The lifeguard team plans and implements waterfront programming to engage campers and foster character development and promote healthy lifestyles in coordination with the Program Managers. Provide oversight during activity times and as needed.

Key Responsibilities:
-Provide a safe environment for all staff and youth while at the waterfront
-Ensures life jackets are worn at all required times
-Ensure safety of all campers, including setting clear safety expectations, observing and engaging campers while in their care, assessing the appropriateness of camper behaviors, following emergency procedures and all COVID-19 safety protocols.
-Adhere to all safety rules and protocol
-Administer swim tests for all campers
-Supervise counselors assisting at the waterfront
-Maintain all waterfront equipment
-Foster character development consistent with BGCSF philosophy
-Run activities with youth including but not limited to: wellness activities, team building, outdoor education, hiking, and overnight camping
-Other duties as specified by direct supervisor
-Swimming lessons are not part of this job

Schedule:
-Temporary/Seasonal Summer position.
-Applicants should be available June 10 – August 7, 2024 to work & live on-site at our Camp location in Northern California (Mendocino County).
-Staff members work 40-56 hours/week depending on position with two days off per week. Days off vary per session.

Pay:
The wage range for this role takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; licensure and certifications; and other business and BGCSF needs. At BGCSF, our decisions are based on other factors and dependant on circumstances for each position. Depending on the need and requirement of the position, an individual could be hired at or near the entry level, mid – level or top of the range for their role and compensation. As such, a reasonable estimate for this temporary summer position from June 10 – August 7, 2024, is $4,308.48.

Required Skills:

-Current Red Cross Lifeguarding certification or equivalent
-Over the age of 21 by start of employment
-Experience supervising youth as a lifeguard
-Demonstrated ability to work effectively with coworkers and campers
-Ability to handle difficult or stressful situations in a professional manner
-Excellent communication skills
-Ability to work independently with minimal supervision

Preferred Skills:

-Experience working with youth in an overnight camp setting
-Experience working with youth from disadvantaged circumstances

About Camp Mendocino

Camp is located four hours north of San Francisco and is spread over 2,000 acres. We provide transportation between San Francisco and Camp at the start and end of the summer.

All Camp Employees are expected to live, sleep and work at Camp. Camp Mendocino provides meals and lodging for the duration of the employment period.

We offer a wide range of activities at Camp including: swimming, a three part challenge course, mountain biking, archery, dance and drama, arts and crafts, environmental education, sports, overnight camping, and much more!
