Overview
Main Responsibilities:
Reporting directly to the Outdoor Education Program Coordinator, the Outdoor Education (OE) Specialist is responsible for the following:
Facilitating educational programs and activities in outdoor settings.
Working extensively in the field, conducting engaging and informative outdoor expeditions, leading workshops, and teaching various outdoor skills and concepts that include hiking, camping, rock climbing, navigation, wilderness survival, and environmental awareness.
Educating participants about ecological systems, environmental conservation, and sustainability practices.
Fostering an appreciation for nature and promoting responsible outdoor behaviour.
Collaborating with the OE Program Coordinator to develop educational materials, lesson plans, and resources for outdoor education programs. Aligning curriculum with academic standards and incorporating experiential learning methodologies.
Leading groups of participants during outdoor excursions, providing guidance, support, and supervision. Fostering teamwork, cooperation, and positive group dynamics.
Ensuring the availability of necessary trip gear for participants and overseeing its proper usage and maintenance during outings.
In addition to the listed main responsibilities, the specialist will also be collaborating with and aiding the OE Program Coordinator in the following responsibilities:
Assessing and mitigating potential risks associated with outdoor activities. Helps implement safety protocols and guidelines to ensure the well-being of participants during outdoor expeditions.
Collaborating with other outdoor education specialists, educators, and professionals in related fields to exchange knowledge, share best practices, and stay updated on current trends and research.
Assisting in maintaining and organizing outdoor equipment, supplies, and resources.
Remaining available to the program coordinator for other tasks as needed.
Required Skills:
Qualifications/Skills:
Bachelor of Education preferred
Strong knowledge and passion for outdoor activities, environmental science, and education
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Proficiency in outdoor skills and safety protocols
Ability to lead and inspire groups in outdoor settings
Organizational and logistical skills for planning and executing outdoor programs
Adaptability and problem-solving abilities in dynamic outdoor environments
