Length: Term of positions is 32 weeks; full-time 40 hrs/wk

Compensation: $18.75/hour, plus $1000 housing allowance (equivalent to $24.52/hr for 40 hr work week)

Start Date: June or July 2023

Position Title Recreation Management Resource Assistant

Position Details

Stewards Individual Placement Program (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health.

Stewards in partnership with the Coronado National Forest is seeking an intern who will

Provide district level support to planning and implementation of complex recreation programs including dispersed, developed, wilderness, trails, motorized, and forest programs.
Provide supervision and oversight for recreation management projects. Participate in grant writing, grants and agreements management, planning, project development, and project implementation.
Develops plans for use of wilderness areas, construction and maintenance of trails, parking areas, trailhead facilities, campgrounds, and other developed recreation sites in consultation with other resource personnel. Recommends changes based on management objectives.
Analyzes and interprets data to formulate recommendations that achieve management objectives and policies and suggests alternative methods for achieving objectives.
Participates in recruitment and management of volunteer groups and other partnerships including establishing agreements, terms of service, and reimbursement of expenses when applicable.

The Coronado National Forest, including the Sierra Vista Ranger District, features a robust and forward-thinking recreation program. The Forest serves a diverse, multi-cultural community along the United States-Mexico border.

Qualifications:

Position Responsibilities will include:

Plan and implementation a complex recreation program including dispersed, developed, wilderness, trails, motorized, and forest programs. Provide oversight for recreation management projects.
Work with supervisor to establish a site visit schedule based on operational needs.
Provide guidance and direction for seasonal and temporary employees.
Develop tracking tools to monitor the condition and track maintenance needs for developed and dispersed recreation

Required Skills:

Minimum Requirements:

Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable by Conservation Legacy (over 21 years old or drivers license for at least three years).
Demonstrated interest in natural resource management or recreation management.
Ability to obtain an associate degree or higher before end of term to be eligible for Direct Hire Authority.

Professional or volunteer experience in public lands recreation management
Desire to work in southeastern Arizona beyond this internship

Stewards in partnership with the USDA Forest Service Southwestern Regional Office are seeking a Resource Assistant to assist in administrative operations, program management, and database management for projects funded under the Great American Outdoors Act. These positions will serve the USDA Forest Service Southwestern Region Regional Office and 11 National Forests across the region with professional civil engineering services in support of projects for the Great American Outdoors Act (GAOA) under the mentorship and advisement of agency engineers.
